Create and use skills in Marloo

Turn repeated Ask Marloo workflows into reusable skills, then run, manage, import, and share them with your team. Skills are in early access and must be enabled by Marloo support.

Written by Liam McGuire

Skills turn workflows you repeat in Ask Marloo into reusable prompts that anyone can run with a slash command. A skill can prepare a meeting agenda, create a morning briefing, draft a paraplanning request, or guide another repeatable process in a consistent way.

Early access: Skills must be enabled for your account by a Marloo team member. Ask for access through the Marloo support chat.

Run a skill in Ask Marloo

  1. Open Chat, Home, or Ask Marloo within a client, meeting, or document.

  2. Type / in the message field. A list of your skills appears.

  3. Use the arrow keys to select a skill and press Enter. You can also click a skill or keep typing its name.

  4. Review the skill chip and saved prompt that appear.

  5. Add anything extra you want Ask Marloo to consider, then send the message.

  6. Answer any follow-up questions. You can also add files if Ask Marloo needs more information.

You can also click + and choose Add skill.

The skill applies to that message and uses the information available in the chat where you opened it. For example, running a meeting agenda skill from a client record lets Ask Marloo use that client file to prepare the agenda.

Create a skill

Create a skill from chat

  1. Open any Ask Marloo chat and enter /create-skill.

  2. Describe the workflow you want to reuse and the result it should produce.

  3. Answer Ask Marloo's questions about when the skill should run, what information it should use, how detailed it should be, and how the result should be structured.

  4. Review the skill Ask Marloo proposes and request any changes.

  5. Tell Ask Marloo to save the skill.

The new skill appears in the menu when you type / in Ask Marloo.

For example, you could create a skill that interviews you and prepares a concise, structured paraplanning request using your answers and the client file. You can tell the skill to show you a draft before saving anything to the client record.

Create a skill from Knowledge

  1. Go to Knowledge > Skills.

  2. Click New skill.

  3. Add a name, a short description, and the instructions Ask Marloo should follow.

  4. Click Create skill.

New skills are private to you.

Upload a skill from Markdown

  1. Go to Knowledge > Skills.

  2. Click Upload skill.

  3. Choose a .md file exported or created in a tool such as Claude or ChatGPT.

  4. Check the name, description, and instructions, then create the skill.

If the file starts with frontmatter, Ask Marloo uses the name and description from there. Otherwise, it uses the file name as the skill name.

Edit and manage a skill

Open a skill from Knowledge > Skills to change its name, description, or instructions. You can also click Ask Marloo to edit it in a chat pane, or ask Ask Marloo to edit a skill from any chat.

Editing a skill does not change chats where you already used an older version.

Share a skill with your team

Skills are private to you by default. Every Marloo user can share their skills:

  1. Go to Knowledge > Skills.

  2. Find the skill you want to share and open the three-dot menu.

  3. Select Share with team.

Choose how much your team can do with it:

- **Shared with team** - colleagues can run the skill from the **/** list but not change it.
- **Team can edit** - colleagues can also change the skill's name, description, prompt, icon and colour. Changing who can see it, turning it off, and deleting it stay with you as the owner.

Your skills list is grouped into **My skills**, **Shared with me** and **From Marloo**. Changes in the editor save as you make them - there is no separate Save button.

You can do all of this by asking Marloo instead. In Ask Marloo or Global chat, ask Marloo to rename, edit, share, make private, duplicate or delete one of your skills by name, or ask whether a skill is private or shared. Marloo confirms before it saves a change.

Find ideas for useful skills

Start with work you ask Ask Marloo to do repeatedly, such as:

  • Preparing a morning briefing from your tasks and recent meetings

  • Reading a client file and drafting the agenda for the next meeting

  • Interviewing you and drafting a structured paraplanning request

  • Preparing follow-up content or gathering information for a repeatable process

You can also ask Ask Marloo in general chat to search your past chats and suggest skills based on tasks or prompts you repeat.

Tips for better skills

  • Name the skill after the job it does so it is easy to find from the / list.

  • Write instructions as if you are briefing a colleague: what to use, what to produce, what to include, and what to leave out.

  • Run a skill from a client, meeting, or document chat when the work relates to that record.

  • Ask Ask Marloo to show its sources when you need to check the result.

  • Run a new skill on a real example, then refine its instructions if the output needs tuning.
