Style individual tables, rows and cells in a document template

Give one table, row, cell or callout box its own colours without changing the table style used across the rest of your document - for advisers and paraplanners editing document templates.

Your document style holds one table style for the whole document, but you can still give individual tables, rows and cells their own look. The Tables tab in Documents > Styles sets the header row, body cells, borders and banded rows for every table in the export. When one table needs to stand out, edit it directly in the document template instead - the rest of the document keeps your chosen style.

Change the fill colour of a cell

  1. Open the document template and click into the table cell you want to change.

  2. Click the small blue dot that appears on the cell's right edge to open the cell menu.

  3. Under Cell fill, choose a preset swatch or type a colour into the hex colour box.

The cell now shows your chosen fill. To remove it, open the cell menu again and click Clear fill.

Style a whole row or several cells at once

  1. Click into the first cell, then shift-click the other cells you want - for example, every cell in the header row.

  2. Open the cell menu and set the Cell fill. The fill applies to all selected cells at once.

  3. Change the text colour of the selected cells if you want it to contrast with the new fill.

To create banded rows, repeat this row by row, alternating the fill colour as you go. The table shows the new banding straight away.

Restyle many tables with Ask Marloo

For changes across several tables, or across the whole document, use Ask Marloo - the panel on the right of the editor. Describe the change in plain words, and Ask Marloo applies it to every matching table throughout the document without touching the Styles editor.

Example prompts:

  • "For each table in the Reason for seeking advice section, make the header row background dark blue and the following rows banded white and blue."

  • "For all rows containing the word Title, make the background red and the text white."

Once Ask Marloo has finished, scroll through the document to see the updated tables.

Add a callout box

A single-cell table makes a simple callout box - useful as a red flag box for warnings or items the adviser needs to review.

  1. Go to Insert > Table and insert a 1 by 1 table.

  2. Type your text into the cell.

  3. Click the blue dot on the cell's right edge and set a Cell fill colour.

The box now sits in the document with its own fill, ready to catch the reader's eye.

Note: Cell fills you set in the template override the table shading from your document style when the document is exported to Word. Everything you have not changed keeps the style from Documents > Styles.
